Cool findings: Piccolo, the drawing robot

Posted by pixellogo on February 29, 2012 in Design Videos

Design studio Diatom have created a small device with immense potential. It's the tiny CNC based robot called Piccolo, an automated small bot that can draw by its own. Piccolo is a low-cost kitset device that uses servos to create a mechanism for tinkering with or developing for basic 2D or 3D CNC output. Applications range from simple drawings, generative designs and data visualations, to small scale laser cutting or 3d printing, depending on the tool head used. Piccolo’s small size, low power and low cost makes it easy to use in almost any environment and in multiples. The Piccolo pro

Old School Work: 1960′s Life Science Book Covers

Posted by pixellogo on February 29, 2012 in Uncategorized

It's always important to look back of where graphic design comes from. In its early stages it must've been pretty awesome to experiment on different printing methods, composition styles and illustrations, and as we know there have been a lot of changes throughout the times. We've already seen some examples of vintage covers and I think they're a great example of the basis of editorial and graphic design. The 1960's Life Science book covers are a perfect demonstration of how the times changed, and how different the style was back then..and most importantly how that has influenced our current wo

Amazing findings: Star Wars iconoscope

Posted by pixellogo on February 29, 2012 in Design & Style

Wayne Dorrington is a London based graphic designer and illustrator that saying he's a Star Wars fan might fall a bit short. He's been working for quite some time in the illustration of the initial Star Wars trilogy (from IV to VI) in the form of a breakdown of the entire movies. It is quite some impressive work and I can't even fathom how much time he must've spent watching all the movies to get all the details right. The last episode he illustrated (iconoscope as he calls it) is about 5 pages long and doesn't spare with the details of custom changes, scenes and different characters. And alt

Typographic love: modified fonts

Posted by pixellogo on February 29, 2012 in Design & Style

We've already featured a remarkable amount of typographic posts in the past weeks but I think there's not enough appreciation in the world for great type design work. This time I'd like to refer to the work involving type and art, a mix that results in amazing work. Thanks to the behance network I've encountered this 2 examples that are completely brilliant. The first one is called 'B Type' and it's basically a serif type that's been overlapped with abstract and colourful painted squares to be cut out. A pretty basic idea but in the end it looks pretty cool: The next project I'd

Beautiful Branding: Sabadi Modica Chocolate

Posted by pixellogo on February 28, 2012 in Design & Style

Italian studio Happycentro was in charge of the corporate identity of the Sabadi Modica Chocolate, an italian brand that follows the slow food philosophy for their products. The overall concept that represents the brand is about the enjoyment of life and simple things and as such they look for the rawest ingredients to keep the traditional craft of chocolate making. They focus their products to be 'eatables with magic inside' and as such, the overall identity was built around this organic feel. Their line of products consists of six types of chocolate which are all identified by a characte

Keeping up with the trends: Pixar movies minimalistic posters

Posted by pixellogo on February 28, 2012 in Design & Style

We've already seen various examples of minimalistic movie posters that have been so popular in the past time. This time australian designer Wonchan Lee decided to take on a tribute to the lovely Pixar movies by presenting them in a minimalistic style. And keeping up with the Pixar style these illustrations are brilliantly cute and greatly executed with simple details and vibrant colours. So for the Pixar fans out there, can you recognize all the movies? My favourite by far is the Ratatouille one, but not only because it's the best movie ever, absolutely not.

Predicting the future of famous logos

Posted by pixellogo on February 28, 2012 in Design & Style

The folks at Stocklogos have come up with a list of the possible future of famous logos and it's actually pretty funny what they've imagined (that Gap chronology made me chuckle). The evolution of these brands can be seen across the times and as some of them have taken more subtle changes others have gone a whole different route but one thing that they have in common is that simplicity is taking over the evolution of logos (pretend or not).   (isn't the 2020 logo a bit too similar to the one released earlier this year?)

Great design: Swiss Film Archive

Posted by pixellogo on February 28, 2012 in Design & Style

I came across this project via the Behance Network (which by the way has some great work from designers across the world) and I thought it was worth to mention. The Swiss Film Archive got an updated corporate identity thanks to the CREA School in Geneve, Switzerland, and it's a beautiful example of good design. The overall image is based on the primary shapes and colours, that is square-circle-triangle, red-yellow-blue, without it being too busy. The results are a delicate mix between bold shapes and light gradients of colour that are combined to create more complex shapes. The different appli
