Cool findings: Sand Drawings

Posted by pixellogo on March 21, 2012 in Design & Style

Finally winter is over (at least by our calendars) and the thought of beaches and everything sunny is finally coming closer to being a reality. We've already seen a tribute to the winter in the form of snow drawings but this time let's see the opposite side: beach sand drawings! Most of you have probably had their chance to draw on sand, but Andres Amador takes it to the next level. Very much like the snow drawings, the focus is on abstract patterns that cover the surface and interact with their surroundings (sort of like the hand henna tattoos or zen gardens). He sketches during full moons

Great Illustrations: ‘I know that feel, bro’

Posted by pixellogo on March 20, 2012 in Design & Style

Chris G. is a talented illustrator that has some great work in his website. Via designyoutrust I came across his great work with pop culture characters that might have something in common. This funny illustrations make you think about what it is that connects two different characters around a melancholic feeling and sympathy.. 'I know that feel, bro'. Can you guess what is it that these guys share that make them feel so bad? (I really feel for Hobbes and Tyler Durden, TBH)

Old School Crafts: Glass Signs

Posted by pixellogo on March 20, 2012 in Design & Style

Apparently the overall direction the design world is taking is towards a revindication of old school crafts, such as handmade furniture, hand-printed cards/posters (i.e. letterpress) and pretty much everything traditional. Personally I think it's an appropriate decision to go down that route, specially because it focuses more on the quality of the product more than the mass production of it; it has more of a personal relationship with what's being made, a more thoughtful way to think about how things are done and the skills that are behind them. This time I came across the work of  Danny C

New art trends: Light Installations

Posted by pixellogo on March 20, 2012 in Design & Style, Design Videos

Via Thisiscolossal I've noticed a trend among art installations that are shared on the web. They all have light in common, but in a dynamic way. Two of the following examples involve the application of led lights onto bodysuits -or similar- to create an illusion of bright moving silhouettes. They have been called "light sculptures" or "light paintings" and they live up to their names. It's interesting to see how light comes to life and can be seen as another active element, whether as a static one or a moving figure. Could this art trend influence in any way the next trends in graphic design?

Great advertising: Minimalistic Lego Campaign

Posted by pixellogo on March 19, 2012 in Design & Style

Alright, I know minimalism has been discussed quite a bit around here, but it's become huge and apparently everyone's getting on board. This time, german agency Jung von Matt (which some people point some questionable work under their arm) created a campaign for Lego called Imagine and basically turns our 80's nostalgia into it's most basic forms. The concept is pretty simple: lovable and familiar characters from our childhoods (for some of us at least) translated into a Lego-based language, in its more simplistic way. It's actually quite impressive how such little detail can be so recognizabl

Nazi stolen posters returned to their owner

Posted by pixellogo on March 19, 2012 in Design & Style

With the nazis taking over Germany and Europe, lots of artistic pieces were stolen or plainly lost during the messy years that followed WWII. That's the case of Dr. Hans Sachs, the jewish publisher of the magazine Das Plakat, which focused on the posters art that was so very popular in the interwar period. Since he was young and for over 30 years he started collecting posters from diverse authors that were later confiscated by the Gestapo and went through various owners to end up finally in the German Historical Museum. This collection gathered lots of high quality pieces that constitute a re

Great infographics: the history of beer

Posted by pixellogo on March 19, 2012 in Design & Style

A lot of you probably celebrated St. Patrick's Day this last weekend and most likely (myself included) had a beer or two. But how much do we really know about beer? For starters, beer has accompanied men since humanity's early starts, even being a fundamental part of the ancient egyptians' lives and being a central element that probably saved a lot of people in the middle ages/pre-medical times, since it was healthier/cleaner than water. This infographic explains all of this pretty clearly, and how important beer has been for the development of us all. From this we can conclude that beer is a

Graphic Design Classics: Stefan Kanchev

Posted by pixellogo on March 16, 2012 in Design & Style

Stefan Kanchev (1915-2001) was a Bulgarian graphic artist with a very prolific career that can be seen in his numerous graphic pieces that vary from logos to stamps and other diverse mediae. He has been referred to as the "father of Bulgarian graphic design" and the "master of the trademark" and his work has a very particular style, based on symmetry and the use of simple shapes, being his work with logos the best example of it having around 1,600 examples of them under his arm. The style of his work are inspired by the Bulgarian folklore and tradition which translates into colourful piece

Design trends: Letterpress (unconventional) Greeting Cards

Posted by pixellogo on March 16, 2012 in Design & Style

Letterpress printing process has become very popular in the recent time due to the huge retro trend going on. This time I'd like to refer to this particular trend in somewhat-related stationary design: greeting cards. These cards can be used for any kind of occasion, most usually for weddings, holidays, baby births and so on, but what I'm loving right now are the unconventional greetings, suitable for breakups, screw-ups, witty thank you cards and weird courtship manners among others.  Here are a few examples that I could find on the web, lots of them from Etsy, the never ending source of qui

Useful resources: Logo Maps

Posted by pixellogo on March 16, 2012 in Design & Style

CityMaps is a social mapping website that has come up with a clever and easier way to explore your neighbourhood (that is if you live in NY, San Francisco or Austin for the moment) making the search of different criteria (eating, shopping, entertainment, among others) more intuitive and purely visual. This is how Logo Maps works, instead of filling the urban map with type they chose to put every respective logo in its place, making it easier for users to recognize what their looking for. It definitely makes things easier for people searching for specific stuff, let's say you can search for cof
