New art trends: Light Installations

Via Thisiscolossal I've noticed a trend among art installations that are shared on the web. They all have light in common, but in a dynamic way. Two of the following examples involve the application of led lights onto bodysuits -or similar- to create an illusion of bright moving silhouettes. They have been called "light sculptures" or "light paintings" and they live up to their names. It's interesting to see how light comes to life and can be seen as another active element, whether as a static one or a moving figure. Could this art trend influence in any way the next trends in graphic design?

Cool findings: Piccolo, the drawing robot

Design studio Diatom have created a small device with immense potential. It's the tiny CNC based robot called Piccolo, an automated small bot that can draw by its own. Piccolo is a low-cost kitset device that uses servos to create a mechanism for tinkering with or developing for basic 2D or 3D CNC output. Typography love: a 3D history

The folks at Johnson Banks in the UK were asked to come up with a project that would display the 3d modelling software developed by the college of Ravensbourne. The studio decided to take a typographic approach to the project, thus coming up with Arkitypo, a showcase of different typefaces turned into 3d animated models. The results are.. well, amazing actually. TedTalks: Philippe Starck On Design

In this excellent TedTalk, Philippe Starck spends his 18 minutes reaching for the very roots of the question "Why design?" Phillipe Starck is one of the most famous modern designers working today. He has garnered a great deal of acclaim for his building interior designs as well as being an accomplished architect and product designer. Products designed by Starck can be seen on display in the collections of a number of European and American museums, among them the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the Museum of Design in London.

Logorama – Oscar Winning Animated Short Film

Logorama is a short film that was directed by the French animation collective H5, François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy + Ludovic Houplain. It was presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2009. It opened the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and won a 2010 Oscar for best Animated Short Film. The entirety of Logorama is made up of brand images and logos, with these brand images and logos used to represent characters, props, locations, vehicles, and other content.

Paula Scher at TEDTalks: Great Design is Serious (Not Solemn)
