Typographic Love: Dafi Kühne’s Letterpress Posters

Posted by pixellogo on May 11, 2012 in Design & Style

Dafi Kühne is a very talented Swiss designer and letterpress printer who started his relationship with graphic design in his years studying architecture. His interests later on went towards letterpress printing, technique that has allowed him to create some brilliant pieces of typographic posters. His work style involves mixing digital resources with hands-on methodology, a combination that he explains as the following: “I use both tools—digital and analog—through the whole design and production process. If I want to draw a line straight, I use the computer. If I want to draw a line tr

Cartography Love: San Francisco’s Literary Map

Posted by pixellogo on May 9, 2012 in Design & Style

Typographic maps might just be the next big thing in cartography trends. The combination of words that are combined to create a representation of geographical surface really adds to the complexity and attractiveness of a beautifully designed map. Under this premise, artist Ian Huebert created an amazing Literary Map of the city of San Francisco. It is entirely constructed from literary quotes related to the city, referring to the artistic spirit this Californian metropolis is known for. The collection of quotes was recollected by book editor John McMurtrie, in the hopes of paying tribute to al

Typography love: Wired Magazine Typeface

Posted by pixellogo on May 9, 2012 in Design & Style

UK based Studio8 Design has some very beautiful work that ranges from corporate identity to editorial design. Their custom typeface they designed for Wire Magazine is a great example of their work, a very simple and strong type with a lot of character. With an old school look mixed with geometrical-3D shapes, the layouts created using it are quite astonishing. The volumetric letters channel the modern aspect, combining their 3D nature with the use of shades. It was used throughout the magazine and iPad app for chapter headers, also the typeface can be colored in numerous ways in order to suit

Editorial Beauties: Dale! Magazine

Posted by pixellogo on May 8, 2012 in Design & Style

The editorial work of Argentinian designer Clara Fernandez for the magazine Dale! is absolutely brilliant. The magazine aims to be a full collection of contemporary culture, with topics varying from social subjects to art related articles. The overall design of the editions are executed beautifully with great typographic work and modern layout design. I specially love the color treatment of the images and how she achieved to come up with a graphically consistent edition within such a wide range of styles between each title. Besides, the way she managed to create an attractive look for a magazi

Typography Love: Monster Type

Posted by pixellogo on May 3, 2012 in Design & Style

If you grew up in the 90's you probably remember shows like Ren & Stimpy or Aaahh! Real Monsters with their twisted sense of humor and overall gross aesthetic. The illustrator Nathan Walkers went back to his childhood memories for some inspiration and created this awesome alphabet that is borderline disturbing. Each letter has been drawn to resemble the grossness of those shows and I have to admit he accomplished that pretty well in a very cool manner. Awesome work!! Via

Amazing findings: Re-designing NYC’s Metrocards

Posted by pixellogo on April 23, 2012 in Design & Style

Melanie Chernock is a graphic designer that came up with a very interesting project for her Communication Design class at the School of Visual Arts. It is based on the re-design of the classical NYC's metrocard, one of the most used things by citizens daily. Her statement is based on how these cards should be properly designed, and why not come up with different versions of it? She took inspiration on some of the iconic neighborhoods of the city and translated them into clever interpretations of them (see the Meatpacking district one!). The cards featuring non-digital elements were made by han

Typographic Love: Knife Type

Posted by pixellogo on April 18, 2012 in Design & Style

Farhad Moshiri is an Iranian artist that is known for his installations that are ironic interpretations of hybrids between traditional Iranian forms and pop culture. For this particular artwork he has created a brilliant typographic display that reads "Life is Beautiful", the catchline? The type is constructed out of knifes inserted on the wall. A witty play of words and material that clash with the spirit of the sentence (considering the nature of its construction) and its fancy style. There's another piece of his work that's also based on knife-constructed type but in this ca

Brilliant design: Philosophy posters

Posted by pixellogo on April 16, 2012 in Design & Style

We recently saw a display of philosophic posters that translated ideologies into a visual form, but this time Max Temkins work has a different approach to it. He takes some of his favourites philosophical quotes from diverse authors and creates these beautiful typographic posters. His project is on Kickstarter, and it has allowed him to make his prints of first quality. The posters themselves are beautiful, they combine a strong typographic work that enhances the intentions of the quotes, paired up with an abstract profile of their author. They are perfect inspirational posters that deliver bo

Typographic love: Typophile Film Festival Opening Titles

Posted by pixellogo on April 13, 2012 in Videos

Typophile is a community of type enthusiasts that covers everything on the topic. They've produced a series of Typophile Film Festivals, and although this opening title is a couple years old (it was released in 2009) it won't stop being amazing. It was made by a group of BYU students and faculty members, creating a fun video that appeals to all senses. It's really fun to watch, and is quite amazing to think that it was completely made without any computer generated graphics, only stop motion. These opening titles are a clear result of pure type love, each section has been carefully

Typography love: Watercolour Alphabets

Posted by pixellogo on April 12, 2012 in Design & Style

There are quite a few examples of modified types made by hand, but I have to confess that Sasha Prood's work is one of the most beautiful and delicate work I've encountered so far. Her range of work varies from illustration to graphic design and all of them are based in a great display of craft, she works with pencil and watercolours, a nice break from the digital produced era. Her typographic work is specially beautiful as the use of colours are made in such a delicate manner that looks effortless. The Watercolour Alphabet series consists of different type styles re-drawn with vibrant colours
