How to design the ultimate business card

Business Card Designs

I collect business cards. I have a shoebox in my closet that is overflowing with awesome business cards that I have collected over the years. But, out of these hundred business cards that I have kept, I must have thrown out another thousand. So, why did I decide to keep these specific 100 business cards? The business cards that I keep are all amazing business card designs that have blown me away.

A great business card design is an essential marketing tool for your business. Clients will remember an attractive business card and it will create new business for you. Here are a few tips to help you create the ultimate business card design.

Be selective with your content
Your business card should immediately communicate to your clients what you do and it should match your company’s brand. If you have created brochures or a website in the past, make sure that your business card uses elements from those designs.

Don’t make your business too cluttered. Minimalism is best with business cards. Your logo should be included on your business card as well as your company’s slogan, if you have one. If you're struggling to come up with a great slogan, consider using an online slogan generator for inspiration. Your name, title and contact information also need to be clearly displayed on your business card.

Choose the perfect typeface/font
The typeface that you decide to use on your business card will set the tone so choose it carefully. Here are a list of the top 5 fonts most commonly used by print designers: Helvetica, Garamond, Futura, Universe and Bondoni.

Add color to your business card design
Color is something that you can easily add to your business card and it makes a world of a difference. Many designers claim that clients will keep a color card 10 times longer than a black and white card. Use CMYK for your business card design.

Don’t forget bleed
Make sure that you add bleed to your business card design. Bleed is an extra area around your business card design and your background should extend out into the bleed. Why? Bleed ensures that when your business cards are printed, your design will go all the way to the edge of the cards.

Consider different print materials
Traditional business cards are printed on card stock. This is by far the most common print material for business cards and it is the most cost effective as well. However, if you would like to capture more attention with your business cards or leave a stronger impression on your clients, you may want to consider some other more non-traditional materials for your business card. For example, you can have your business card printed on plastic, metal or wood.
